Owner questions, not a promised timetable
Owners discussing collision repair on Reddit often worry about the same mismatch: their rental clock has started while their car is still waiting for an estimate or a part. Other owners report much shorter visits. Those accounts describe individual repairs, not a reliable timetable for your Model 3 or Model Y. This guide gives you a plan for your own conversation with the shop and insurer.
Start with the vehicle's condition and the purpose of the appointment
Tell the shop the exact model and year, the impact area, any warning messages and whether the vehicle has already been inspected. Send wide photos and close-ups, and disclose wheel contact, fluid leakage or a change in steering. Photos help organize intake; they cannot establish that a collision-damaged vehicle is safe to drive.
Ask whether the appointment is for an initial inspection, authorized disassembly or the start of approved repairs. If the car can safely remain with you, discuss whether assessment and parts planning can happen before the repair drop-off. If its condition is uncertain, call for an appropriate transport plan instead of delaying a necessary inspection to save rental days.
Ask for the next milestone, not an unsupported completion date
Keep a short repair record with five entries: assessment status, estimate status, authorization status, parts status and the next customer update. For every open item, write who is handling it and the next expected contact date. This is a conversation tool, not a claim that every repair follows an identical schedule.
For example, “The bumper is ordered” leaves several questions unanswered. Has the correct part been confirmed for this vehicle? Is there a confirmed arrival date or only an estimate? Does anything else need to arrive before work can proceed? Has disassembly identified additional damage? Ask the shop which unresolved item currently controls the schedule.
Keep a supplement separate from a delay explanation
An initial estimate can change when inspection exposes damage that was not visible earlier. California's Department of Insurance explains that a shop may contact the insurer for approval of additional repair costs when further damage is found. Ask to see what changed and which approval is outstanding. A supplement is a documented change in scope; the word alone does not tell you how many days the repair will take.
Calibri's published Tesla teardown story shows Model 3 and Model Y vehicles at the damage-assessment stage. The completed gray Model Y in that story is a separate vehicle. It is useful evidence of the stages involved, not a promise that your repair will follow the same timing.
Confirm the rental budget before collecting the keys
An insurance-funded rental, a rental you arrange yourself and a shop loaner have different terms. Confirm which arrangement applies and who approves it. Ask for the daily allowance, total allowance or day limit, covered fees, return deadline and the process for discussing an extension before the approved period ends.
Rental reimbursement under your own policy is optional coverage with limits; it does not automatically continue for every day a repair is unfinished. A claim against another driver's insurer requires its own confirmation. California's insurance guidance describes daily and overall limits, so obtain the terms for your actual claim rather than assuming another owner's “30 days” applies to you.
Calibri has documented individual Tesla arrivals where towing and a loaner were provided. Availability, eligibility and terms still need to be confirmed for your visit. A prior customer's arrangement is not a reservation for the next customer.
Use one short status request when dates change
Ask: What stage is the vehicle in today? What specific item is preventing the next stage? What date is confirmed, and what date is only estimated? Is anything waiting for my authorization? When will I receive the next update? Does the transport plan still cover that period?
Save the answers with your estimate and claim correspondence. If a rental limit is approaching, contact the insurer and shop before it expires. A possible extension should be treated as pending until it is confirmed. Do not interpret a lack of updates as proof that a part has arrived or that the vehicle is ready.
